Reporters Who "Burn" Sources

(Important note: I was informed by a commenter that the story DID appear ... on the front page ... on Christmas Day. My sincere apologies to Kathleen O'Dell for even hinting at a lack of reportorial integrity.)

If you look down this page you will find a blog entry titled "Calling 9-1-1".

I wrote this a couple of weeks ago after a call was made to my mother (who is both aged and has altzheimer's disease) by a Springfield City Official. I simply could not believe that employees of the city would call little old confused ladies and accuse them -- in essence -- of committing a crime.

After I contactedTony Messenger at the Springfield News Leader, I was then called by the "health" reporter for the paper, Kathleen O'Dell. Now -- to begin with, I admit that I don't have very much respect for health reporting nowadays, either in the paper, or from other outlets like KYTV. In general, although they sometimes get it right, more often than not they peddle a bunch of woo-woo to an unsuspecting public. The reporters don't know what they are talking about, they don't bother checking to find out the facts, and they just write, or broadcast, a cutsie feel-good story.

When I talked with Kathleen I gave her all the details I knew at the time. She of course, promised to get back to me. And of course, never has. And I have a lot more information now.

This is why people don't trust reporters, buy newspapers, and generally hold all the news media in very low regard.

I have been "burned" as a source of information by O'Dell. I have a long memory, and it won't happen again. I made a mistake by not telling every other news outlet about the story and putting some commercial pressure on her.

As for the story? It has disappeared. Not important. Not significant. Maybe city leaders denied it. Maybe they lied about the whole thing.

How would the reporter know ... and most importantly, how would I as a consumer of news know?

Was it Worth It?

Was it worth the lives of 3,000 American servicemen and women, and the lives of 650,000 Iraquis to hang Saddam?

Did we spend $500 billion wisely?

A Comment on a long-ago Post

I was reading the comments on Tony Two-Fingers blog this morning and noticed that the mouldy, rotting Hiter Zombie corpse made an appearance.

Quite awhile ago I had a post on the use of the Hitler Zombie on the net and BettyB made a comment that I failed to answer.

Betty B. said...

Local blogger Michael Soetaert ( posted a recent comparison of Fascism and the Bush regime. I've read it several times, and many of the parallels discussed ring true to me. My plans to post a similar commentary have now been moved to the front burner.

Good point. There is a facism in the world today, although Hitler's corpse is not .

Facism is generally defined as an unholy relationship between government and industry. Think of The nazies and IG Farben, or Dick Cheney and Halliburton.

So can we with some justification call the Bush administration fascists? Yes, I think you can make a very good argument for that very point.

How Badly are We Being Ripped Off by Utilities?

As I was listening to the BBC this morning there was a report of the Ukraine agreeing to sell natural gas to Western Europe for $105 per 1000 cubic meters.

This is going to take some math conversion so stick with me.

There are 35,314 cubic feet in 1000 cubic meters. At the price of $105 the cost for natural gas is $0.003 per cubic foot.

On my last bill from CU I was charged $0.08 per cubic foot. This is 27 times what the Ukranians are charging the W. Europeans.

I thought of the cost of transportation --- that argument doesn't fly since the Ukranian pipeline is a minimum of three times longer that the pipeline for Springfield.

World energy prices? What a joke that is on all of us given by monopolies to justify profiteering and gouging in light of the figures above.

So the next time you hear CU's spin machine tell you what a good deal Springfield has -- give John Twitty a call and ask him about these numbers

If I were paying what the Europeans are paying to heat my house my last bill would have been $2.70 rather than $109.00. But that wouldn't have paid for the high-priced help at CU, would it?

VD(j) Calls Pot Black

VD(j) never one to shy away from calling pots black ... and mightily depressed about his lack of X-mas when his daughters decided to go to Ft. Lauderdale and enter topless contests, calls an editorial blog by Tony Two Fingers Messenger, "plagerism".

Seems as though somebody at the Washington Moonie Times had roughly the same idea. But who the hell reads the Rev Moon's paper anyway except for JesusIHateBillO' (R-loofa sponge lover).

Especially moving, since VD(j) has never had an original thought in his life either on his blog or on the radio.

Everything is stolen from someone else.

NORAD Fails Us Again

At just a few minutes after midnight tonight news reports started leaking from deep within the caverns of Chyenne Mountain that a situation was developing over the continental US that places us in as much danger as on September 11th.

At 11:50:36.57645434 an unknown object was reported whizzing over the eastern US crashing into most residences on the east coast. Damage is reported to be extensive. Eyewitnesses suggest that a drunken elf is at the controls of a "large sleigh" or UFO. (Although these reports have been minimized by the US Air Force as "citizens in their cups doing some fanticising over non-existant beings - remember the last scare over the tooth fairy and the easter bunny?) NORAD is looking for the red telephone to notify the President, but seems to have misplaced it during the office party held until the wee hours last night.

Major General Assoverteakettle, duty officer at NORAD, said they were going to scramble the two remaining DC-3s left in flyable condition in the continental US from Luke AFB, to observe the object as it crossed the Mississippi river. Teakettle, in a short statement said all other Air Force equipment is either deployed, in transit, or worn out and rusting in the sands of the Middle East protecting us againt hoards of lonely goatherds singing on the hilltops. "We will have all this sorted out within 24 hours", he promised.

Since damage has been so extensive, FEMA has been notified. The nightwatchman who answered the phone said that he would leave a post-it note on the door of the director, but was not sure when it would be read since, "The Director is out to lunch, and I don't know when or if, he will ever come back."

THIS JUST IN: First responders across the nation have been asked to pick up their white painted helment liners at local armories and leave thier normal duties of guarding watertowers, viaducts, and swimming pools, and report to local politician's houses. Since many of these first responders are elderly, having joined during the latest slackening of age standards by Civil Defense, they are expected to take several hours to report after finding false teeth, eyeglasses, light switches, mittens and boiling water for the handy heating pad they are required to sit on.

Halliburton has just announced that they have been awarded a contract to rebuild the east coast. They had no estimate of the value of the contract, but said that wasn't important anyway since it was "cost plus 20%". They have stated that they will not repeat previous mistakes like forgetting to put plumbing into each and every house. An immediate call for plumbers has just gone out at a starting wage of $243,000 per hour.

Deaths are rported to be very high, but David FatCity, spokesman for the Bush administration disputed the figures saying that, "It' appears to be the fault of liberals and democrats who opposed our suggesting in 1964, to strengthen roofs and make chimneys wider."

The Danger of American Religion

This short documentary film is one of the most chilling things I have ever seen. Granted most people would be loath to call $cientology a religion, but it is certainly a cult of beliefs.

How have we managed to let them take over Clearwater, Florida, a city the size of Springfield? And corrupt the police and city government to do thier bidding rather than enforce the laws of the country?

They did it the good old fashioned American way. They bought it.

As you watch this documentary you will be shaken to your very soul at how easy it is for Americans to be coopted by fanatics and crazies of any stripe, $cientologists, fundamentalists, domionists, .....

See it HERE before it gets pulled off the net ...

VD(j) and Lousy Programming

Since VD is running reruns and tunes from the 1940's this morning ... I thought he might like a rerun from me.

Go HERE to see it.

It's an oldy but goldy ....

Curbstone Critic Mentioned in New Book

Prof. Vic Stenger is Emeritus Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Hawaii. He is presently Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado.

He has written numerous books on science, and science and religion. Above is the dust jacket of his latest, in which this author gets an honorable mention.

Stenger thinks, as do most scientists that there is no need whatsoever, of any supernatural explanation for anything in the universe. In almost 400 years of systematic investigation of nature there is not one single solitary example of any need for any explanation of any phenomena in the universe that involves the supernatural.

Not in physics....

Not in Chemistry...

Not in Biology ...

I am the token biologist on Vic Stenger's listserve where he discusses with his peers what he is writing, and they act as editors and peer reviewers for him. I stay away from the physics, mainly becasuse I don't understand what they are talking about half the time. But I do jump in occasionally when physicists dabble in Biology. Mostly they do an excellent job. They pulled our fat out of the fire in the 70's and 80's when the creationists (I prefer to call them cretinists) crawled out from the woodwork again to make fools of themselves fighting organic evolution. We biologists were absent, in large part, from the battlefield because we thought it was such a stupid subject that it was demeaning to participate. That has all changed.

Stenger offers several examples and knockdowns of old religious canards such as Paley's watchmaker analogy (almost 200 years old) and the Anthropic Principal(s), to show that all these questions are false in themselves and that there is absolutely no reason to suspect any influence outside the laws of nature to either cause them or to explain them.

You can read many of Stenger's articles in the popular literature by going HERE and brousing through his website.

VD(j) Fucks to Fry Cow River

VD(j) fantacizes that he is a good short order cook ... rather than a lousy DJ. I agree, and that is probably where he will wind up working in a month or two. I understand that Sister Lorraine is hiring.

I heard that he learned his craft while working on a garbage scow plying the trade routes on Great Slave Lake. He was fired from that job too, after complaints that it was hard to tell the dinner from the cargo.

But here is a menu from his latest house party where he tried to use a '56 Cadillac hubcap as a wok. Come to think of it -- I would rather lick the crankcase of a '56 Chevy than eat his food.

Local Booger Does VD(j) Impersonation

VD(j) and the Neverending Search for Publicity

I won't tell which fellow booger set me on to this story -- other than until he told me this, I actually thought he was a normal guy.

It seems as though VD(j) will do anything to see the name Schattenkirk spread around the world, just like a case of avian flu. Radio DJs are not known for having the best taste or manners but I think he has gone too far with this one, especially during sweeps week.

Stern has strippers live on his radio show ... well ... stripping. (I must admit, I have never really gotten the point of this). Billy Long has people who pay him $10 for a thirty second spot on some live interviews. Jerry Springer has Paris Hilton/Lindsey Lohan/Brit/Fed Ex wanna'-be's on all the time.

So VD(j) is planning a special show for Jan 3rd.

He is going to have his butt bleached live on his show. He will have a local woman, who is into alternative medicine/health/yoga and thongs come live to the studio and bleach his butt.

Think I'm kidding? Here is a quote from THIS SITE ....

I first heard of this phenomenon from a close friend. She asked me if I bleached my butt. I looked at her in horror and said, "No. Why do you ask?" "Well I heard people did, just wondering if you did." said she. "Who would do such a thing?" Asked I. "Australians and Porn Stars." said she. "Oh." I said.

Actually, I think she will bleach the wrong asshole. It should be everyone's else's butt that VD(j) calls his very good friends. That way, VD won't have to have his nose bleached also.

Calling 9-1-1

The Lib-Guy points out as often as anyone how screwed up government is. And I can't disagree with him.

But here is a classic screwup from city leaders ... who have moved to bigger and better offices .. which puts our parents at risk.

My mother is elderly ... hell, I'm elderly ... and we all worry about her falling and not being able to get to a phone to tell anyone. So I bought a thingy that she can wear around her neck and press a button to call 9-1-1 and then it calls me in case something should happen.

Yesterday I was replacing the battery in the unit and accidentally hit the call button. A few minutes later --- who other than the St. Johns ambulance shows up. I apoligised profusly for the false alarm but was grateful that I knew the damn thingy worked.

Well, today a guy, by the name of J. R. Webb at the Springfield Communications center called my mom, and then talked with me. I thought I would have to apologise for wasting everyone's time.

No so ...

Mr. Webb imformed me that there is a Springfield City Ordinance prohibiting recorded calls to the 9-1-1 center. I about fell off my chair. So I started calling around.

Turns out he is right ... there is a law ... SGF Ord 50-46 .. that prohibits any calls to 9-1-1 with prerecorded messages. Not only that, but it is a criminal misdemeanor to do so.

I asked Mr. Webb if 9-1-1 would fail to respond to a recorded message, he said, no ... and I believe that. I also asked if the city would fine or prosecute a caller of a message.... he weaseled by saying he didn't know.

The absolute absurdity of this is self evident. I told Tony Messenger at the paper about it and I think they might be interested ...

But what I just learned was who on City Council sponsored this ordinance back in 1988. Ready ...

....are you sure you are sitting down ...

That friend of the children and the people ...

Norma Champion

VD(j) and a Stupid Song -- and More Stuff

Ok ... let's get right up front. VD(j) has lousy taste in music. That's why he was fired at many radio stations for his programming decisions. Now he has brought his bad taste to Springfield.

He likes a group called the "Wright Brothers". He even promotes them (to handle his johnson, I'm sure), every morning on his shitty little program. Why? Don't ask me ... they have no talent, can't sing, ... strum three chords on a git-box, .... and call themselves a band. They suck ... big time suck ...

But they do have the right politics ... for instance ... they love Ann (R-ManlyManWomanMan) Coulter. Listen to it HERE ....

I wonder what the Doubie brothers have been smoking ... er ...sorry .. the Wright Brothers.

Are they really that big into transsexuals? Here's the scoop on their sex symbol Annie ....

Born as Andrew Coltrane, son of a pig farmer in Georgia, he went to Denmark as a teen to have the surgery, which as David Horowitz can testify, was only partially sucessful. Leaving the family farm for the bright lights of the city, he/she went into the usual male teenage testosterone thingy and became a Repugly. The rumor is he/she did not want to go back to the family business for fear that he/she would be mistaken for one of the livestock.

VD(j) as a cross-dressing promoter on the radio. Could I ask for anything better?

But then this morning got weird. The prosecuting attorney from Christian (cough cough) County was on whining about how a jury had aquitted someone he just knew was guilty of child abuse and child rape. What this incompetent prosecutor said on the show was that the foreman of the jury said that the jury decided without conversation that the accused was not guilty of rape without discussion. They took another hour to decide he wasn't guilty of abuse either.

That's called not guilty, counsellor. And if you keep refering to him as the "alleged" criminal, I think, if I were him, I would sue your ass off. The jury apparently was smarter than the cops or the prosecutor and looked at the facts of the case.

Either an incompetent prosecutor, incompetent cops, or the case should have never gone to trial in the first place.

You stupid shit -- that's the way we do things in America. Your word, on VD(j)'s radio program doesn't mean shit.

Sit down and shut up.

You can listen to the podcast by going HERE ... and listen to the 7:20 and the 7:30 podcast .. but of course they cut out some of the stuff they said ... so I will put up later what they left out.

VD(j) is not only a liar in what he says on the air, he is a cheat in what he allows you to hear in the podcast.

David Vincent Schattenkirk (Jericho)

The reason for this blog entry is to move VD(j)'s identity to the front line in Google ... Everybody needs to click the link to the title. Oh, yes ... it's in the phone book, but he is too chickenshit to have it under his false name, look for his wife, Denise.

This is specifically from this entry on ... everyone should join it and tell the cretins what you think.

I would love to see someone act as moderator and filter out the jerks. If they don't get posted they will go away and then we can have a place to discuss and exchange ideas.

VD(j) Gets Hot on the Radio

VD(j) is sweating. His dollop of morning oatmeal is dribbling down his chin. He's wet, man .. wetter than Brook Shields in Blue Lagoon ... wetter than WaterWorld ... wetter than Jaqueline Bisset in The Deep, (who also starred in a film called Les Marmottes -- choke on your breakfast big girl!!).

VD(j) obcesses over porn star Traci Lords, which is odd considering the placement of his small johnson and the name Traci Lords in the same sentence is the highest form of irony. He likes Traci, I could hear it in his voice. Those pouty lips...

those ....

that .....

Is she into piles of loudmouth jello?

It's a wonder that the sweat dripping off his forehead didn't short out his johnson -- er -- microphone.

It was a way for him to segue into hot latino babes dancing nekkid in SGF bars being watched closely by the Minutepussies -- wait that's redundant! And about the purity of drunk college kids on spring break in Florida who behave like the adults on Bourbon Street in February. By the time he was finsished an emergency order had gone out to route all the Baptist Bible College school busses far away from the studio.

It was a hot time on the old radio this morning.

The Beyond Beliefs Conference

In twenty hours of presentations it is hard to know here to begin. however, begin I shall.

One of the presenters made the comment, "How do we advance science in a fundamentally irrational world."

Firat, we have to accept the idea that we live in a rational universe. A universe controlled by universal laws that are immutable in the universe in which we live. ... the speed of light, the Newtonian Laws of gravity... and so on...

But there are those of a religious bent that claim that we do *NOT* live in a rational universe. That there are supernatural and supernatural reasons for why humans are different from the universe.

Most of this opinion from religious people really falls into an anti-enlightenment view.
As an example, "The enligtenment event is under threat as powerful and as well funded sources wage war on modern enlightment humanitarism philosophies and are values, spoken or doubted, really qustions of reason -- particularly in the sciences."

There is a fear of rational thought from the irrational religious. They may not admit it openly, but it is there in the same way it was there in the 14th century.

Hopefully, like Galileo discovered 350 years after his death science and reas0n will win out over church theology.

In every case I can thnk of where the church has opposed science in the past 300 years, the church has lost the argument. Evidence is more important than belief.

Too bad for the church.

But it is going to repeat ... in the present efforts to do thier church politics, and oppose science, whether it be stem cell research or the truth of organic evolution, the church will come to the end of the game looking stupid, and will give it up -- no matter what they have tried to inculcate their paritioners with thinking ... the people will recognize the truth -- -and the church will lose the truth game.

The Protestant, the Priest and the Rabbi

I have spent almost twenty hours this week listening to a conference on religion and science. It was a wonderful experience, and I will be writing a long blog entry on it. If you wish to get a head start on what I am going to say go HERE ... and start downloading the presentations.

But a story was told that goes thusly, and reflects in a rather sad way what has happened to religion in the US. It goes like this:

A Protestant (fundamentalist, I assume), a Catholic priest, and a Rabbi were at a religious conference in Houston in the summer. Since it was very hot and muggy, they decided to take a swim in the spring fed lake near the hotel. However, none of them had brought a bathing suit.

So they found an isolated area and skinny-dipped, and enjoyed every minute until they heard someone coming through the woods.

They rushed out of the water into the trees to hide. The Protestant and the Priest covered their groins, as best as possible, with their hands. The Rabbi, covered his face.

When asked later why he covered his face, he explained, "I assumed that was the part of me that a member of my congregation would recognize."

I strongly recommend spending a part of your life listening to this conference if you have any interest in science or religion. There will be more to follow, as I get it worked up.

Dominists -- the Failure of Power

JackeM, takes issue with me for using the term "dominionist" as applied to Christians who are as happy to convert to their religion by the sword as they are to force their religion down my unwilling throat by laws that favor their somewhat whacked out brand of religion. As a response I offer the following story, these people are dominionists -- Repugly Dominionists to boot:

Radio Hoax Exposes Anti-Muslim Sentiment in U.S

By Bernd Debusmann, Reuters

WASHINGTON (Dec. 1) -- When radio host Jerry
Klein suggested that all
Muslims in the United States
should be identified with a crescent-shape
tattoo or
a distinctive arm band, the phone lines jammed

The first caller to the station in Washington said that
Klein must be
"off his rocker." The second
congratulated him and added: "Not only do
tattoo them in the middle of their forehead but you ship
them out of
this country ... they are here to kill us."

Another said that tattoos, armbands and other
identifying markers such
as crescent marks on driver's
licenses, passports and birth certificates
did not go far
enough. "What good is identifying them?" he asked.
have to set up encampments like during World
War Two with the Japanese
and Germans."

At the end of the one-hour show, rich with arguments
on why visual
identification of "the threat in our midst"
would alleviate the public's
fears, Klein revealed that
he had staged a hoax. It drew out reactions
that are
not uncommon in post-9/11 America.

"I can't believe any of you are sick enough to have
agreed for one
second with anything I said," he told
his audience on the AM station 630
WMAL, which
covers Washington, Northern Virginia and Maryland.

"For me to suggest to tattoo marks on people's
bodies, have them wear
armbands, put a crescent
moon on their driver's license on their
passport or
birth certificate is disgusting. It's beyond disgusting.

"Because basically what you just did was show me
how the German people
allowed what happened to
the Jews to happen ... We need to separate
we need to tattoo their arms, we need to make them
wear the yellow
Star of David, we need to put them
in concentration camps, we basically
just need to kill
them all because they are dangerous."

The show aired on November 26, the Sunday after
the Thanksgiving
holiday, and Klein said in an
interview afterwards he had been surprised
by the

"The switchboard went from empty to totally
jammed within minutes," said
Klein. "There were
plenty of callers angry with me, but there were

plenty who agreed."

Those in agreement are not a fringe minority.

A Gallup poll this summer of more than 1,000
Americans showed that 39
percent were in favor of
requiring Muslims in the United States,
American citizens, to carry special identification.

Roughly a quarter of those polled said they would
not want to live next
door to a Muslim and a third
thought that Muslims in the United States

September 11,
2001, attacks on New York
and Washington.

A poll carried out by the Council on American-Islamic
Relations (CAIR),
an advocacy group, found that
for one in three Americans, the word Islam
negative connotations such as "war," "hatred" and

The war in Iraq has contributed to such perceptions.

Klein's show followed a week of heated discussions on
talk radio,
including his own, and online forums over
an incident on November 22
involving six Muslim clerics.
They were handcuffed and taken off a US
Airways flight
after passengers reported "suspicious behavior" that

included praying in the departure gate area.

The clerics, on their way to a meeting of the North
American Imams
Federation, were detained in a holding
cell, questioned by police and
FBI agents, and released.
Muslim community leaders saw the incident as

yet more evidence of anti-Muslim prejudice.

Ignorance Seen as Key Problem

Several American Muslims interviewed on the
subject of prejudice over
the past few weeks said
ignorance was at the core of the problem.

"The level of knowledge is very, very low," said
Mohamed Esa, a U.S.
Muslim of Arab descent who
teaches a course on Islam at McDaniel College

in Maryland. "There are 1.3 billion Muslims in the

think they are all terrorists."

Hossam Ahmed, a retired Air Force Reserve colonel
who occasionally leads
prayer meetings for the small
Muslim congregation at the Pentagon,
"Ignorance is the number one problem. Education is
of the essence."

There are no hard figures on how many Muslims

harassment or prejudice and
community leaders say that ugly incidents

Minneapolis woman sent to CAIR
after the imams were taken off their flight.

"I would like to ... help," the e-mail said. "While I
cannot offer plane
tickets, I would be happy to drive
at least 2 or 3 of them. My car is
small, but at least
some of our hearts in this land of the free are large."

And optimists saw signs of change in the November
4 election of the
first Muslim to the U.S. House of
Representatives, which has 435 members.

Democrat Keith Ellison, a 43-year-old African-American
lawyer, did not
stress his religion during his campaign
for a Minnesota seat, but said
his victory would "signal
to people who are not Muslims that Muslims

Jenna and Babs, always go for a party, were asked to leave Argentina after a particularly raucus scene on Ipimema Beach involving nudity and drinks with little umbrellas in them.

They are in South America checking out the new digs for daddy in Paraguay.

Brittany Spears sent them an email saying that they should try to "show some dignity."
